Ladies & Gentlemen (and all others!) from around the World,
I greet thee on this first day of the Year 2008.
I'm quite astonished I made it this far ... that used to be so far out in
the future at one time ...
But now it's here, and we might as well say to ourselves:
"THIS IS GOING TO BE MY BEST YEAR YET!"
And indeed, why not?
In numerology, 2008 = 1, and 1 = The Beginning.
That's wonderful, and also, very true.
It's always true of course - each new dawn is a new beginning, and every
moment, every second is a new beginning too, only we sometimes forget that
... :-)
I heard on the news yesterday that the British Prime Minister said the
coming year was going to be appalling - terrible financial criseesess all
over the place, wars, terrorism, and of course, the dreaded global warming.
This was so widely reported that even I heard it, and I don't give much heed
to the news.
Now, I find that completely appalling.
That is the WORST example of leadership.
That is NOT what people need to hear at any time from their leaders.
It may be all true - there may be financial criseses (or whatever the plural
of crisis might be!). There may be all manner of challenges awaiting each
and every one of us - well of course! That's LIFE, don't you know!
But there is certainly a way to talk about the future which does not deny
the existence of challenges, even very difficult challenges indeed, but
phrased in such a way that it doesn't make folk become terrified, depressed
and stress riddled.
We might say, "There are challenging times ahead, but I believe from the
bottom of my heart, that with all our strength, resources, capabilities, and
by working together, using our intelligence, wisdom and experience, we will
not just overcome these challenges, but we will, indeed, thrive and HAVE THE
BEST YEAR YET!"
Is that the truth?
Yes!
Damn right it is!
Do you recognise this line?
"And all your strength does never yet appear, until the time of test is
here - the time of challenge, and of rising to the challenge!"
It's true!
I've lived long enough now to really be able to say that this is true. We
just don't know what we're capable of until we're really stretched and
challenged; and this alone makes new challenges worth looking forward to, so
that we may learn more about ourselves in the process, gain wisdom, and most
importantly, start to get to a point where we begin to admire our own
strength and abilities absolutely.
Once we realise that in ourselves, we can see it in others too - and then,
humanity is going somewhere, and somewhere good, at that!
Here's the deal.
Every one of us is our own Prime Minister.
We get to lead our selves through life; we get to give our inspirational
speeches to ourselves - it's called having a positive and proactive
attitude.
Next time you start wanting to wail about how difficult things might become,
remember you're the Prime Minister - the First, the one who sets the tone
for everyone and everything in your kingdom.
You set the rate of your breathing, the beating of your heart, the movements
of your hands and even how heavy gravity is for you at any one moment in
time.
It's up to you if you want to be like the British Prime Minister and
totally depress the population with dire warnings of belt tightenings,
terror, floods and chaos ahead; or whether you want to approach this with a
different style of leadership and say, "Fair enough, it won't all be plain
sailing - but let's get to work! Let's find new ways, travel new roads,
let's bring bright energy and volition into play, let's get fabulous
solutions found, repair what's broken, eliminate what's idiotic and go
forward to the new!"
I really do think that every SINGLE time we stand up to these doom mongers
and turn it around, say, "Bring it on! It'll be a blast! And I'll emerge,
stronger than ever!" we do a wonderful thing that goes far beyond mere
survival or dragging yourself from one day to the next - we show true
leadership, strength of character, and we bring positive, bright, proactive
energy that WILL make all the difference in EVERYTHING, and I mean
EVERYTHING, you do.
So I would very much like to wish us all a positive, focused, and proactive
New Year where the opportunities for each one of us are sparkling and
infite, like white sand on the finest beach.
